A look back at 1990's Stephen Kings It
youtube
Its almost October,so lets talk about one of the 90's biggest contributions to horror, the two part miniseries It .I had recently rewatched (PRobabbly third time watching it) and have recently twice watched the excellent documentary Pennywise the Story of It so it is on my mind
Now I am NOT going to talk about the book cause I havent read it ,nor am I going to talk much about the two recent film versions cause I have only seen the first one .This also isnt going to be the typical review I do,cause while I will discuss my oppinions ,more of a ramble about my personal journey with it ,and discussion of its legacy
For those who dont know what It is about,it follows a group of people who defeated a monster 30 years ago ,who have reunited to face it again
Now if you want my oppinion :Its good if a bit uneven .The cast is all pretty settellar from a talented child cast that includes Johnathan Brandis and Seth Green ,to the adult actors which include Annette O Toole ,John Ritter , Harry Anderson,Tim Reid ,and Richard Thomas, the effects are pretty fun,the drama and humor work and its got a great score .Where it falters is the first half is REALLY strong but the second kind of falters ,especially with a bit of a unsatisfying finale ,and some scares wotrk some dnt
However what really makes the movie stand out ,is its villain/secret weapon :Tim Curry as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, the humanoid personification of the monster .Other actors like Roddy McDowall,Alice Cooper,Harvey Fierstine and Malcolm McDowell were considered ,but for reasons I will go into why later ,I think Curry was the best choice
Now the miniseries was a success and usually thats that for a miniseries .....But It has had an afterlife
When I was growing up it was considered one of the SCARIEST movies ever ,it wasnt even seen as a TV thing ,just a scary movie.I also happened upon my dad watching it when I was very young ....Specifically the scene where Pennywise lures then kills Georgie ,the brother of the main character....And it freaked me out
I was actually afraid to watch the movie until Nostalgia Critic did his review of it,and it seems in the 2010's there was kind of a backlash to the movie ,that its not as scary as people thought ,that it was corny and cheesy .Now there seems to be more of a reappraisal after the recent It movies ,with a bit more affection
As for why it has lasted so long I have two answers .One is the story this is tale about not only childhood but looking back on it the good and the bad and what becomes lost in our memory
However the main answer is simple.....Its Tim Currys performance.Put simply he is a perfect boogey man .Curry is a bold dangerous unpredictable performaer ,and instead of being a standar "GRr I'm gonna eat ya " monster.....He is a fun clown ,who is a monster underneath .Its why I am baffled by the backlash of people who say he is TOO goofy:No shit, hes a CLOWN ! The point is he makes you drop your guard cause he is funny and when he grts mean its even scarier ,hes a very unsettling monster ,and I would put Curry's performance up there among the great horror villains
So what do you think of It and why do you think it has lasted over the course of 30 years ?

Got tagged by @udonbullets for the 11 questions thing! 1. Do you cry because of book/video games/movies? Oh yeah definetely. Or well, I atleast get teary eyed very easily. It’s kind of rare that I really do cry but it definetely does happen like, the end of MGS4 really did hit me hard, that was definetely the video game that made me cry the most. 2. Choose between card games/video games/board games Video games for sure. But card games and Board games can be alot of fun too. 3. A fictional character you would want as a room mate (and they were room mates) First, the “and they were room mates” vine is by far one of my favourtie vines. But regarding the question...hmm hard one. Harvey from Stardew Valley could probably be a pretty pleasant room mate, maybe Haru from Persona too. It definetely should be someone who doesn’t leave trash everywhere and isn’t too loud or like, smokes. And someone whos open minded and who I could just be friends with easily. 4. What do you crave? I mean, I really hope that I can handle everything thats gonna happen in the next few months but like, thats more hoping and not craving. But I guess a thing that I just really crave is actually a boyfriend. I just, often feel pretty lonely since I basically never get to really hang out and do alot of stuff with friends and all, and well a boyfriend doesn’t really have to fill that I guess cause maybe he won’t even live close to me but...I dunno, often when I’m outside on my own I just kinda imagine how it would be doing that or going there with someone who I would love and who does the same back and it’s kinda sad thinking about it cause I just don’t really get my hopes high. I guess the craving got a bit less once I thought more about the fact that I might never actually find someone more and that I well, just shouldn’t put too much hope into it and be more realistic but...yeah. Sorry if that might’ve been a bit negative. 5. Favourite school subject (any level) In elementary school, it was Art for sure. But later I started liking english more and more, probably because I just was pretty good at it and actually kinda was the best in my class until 11th grade. Art kinda died down a bit, just because we nearly always used water colours and I really started to hate that. 6. Favourite song? Hard to say since my taste in music literally changes every few weeks but yeah, there are some songs that are like, my all time favourites but I actually tend to forget them pretty easily. I think one of my favourites is Daybreak and Fireflies, especially Rachie’s cover. My R also really stuck with me. At the moment I’m pretty deep back into my J-Pop/Rock/Vocaloid phase again and I’m really liking I’m Glad You’re Evil too and Disappearance Addiction. Oh and I totally love Fake Happy from Paramore and Sweet Adeline by Avi and the Sequoias! Sorry for the Music Spam. 7.What super power do you wish you had that isn’t invincibility/immortality/invisibility/teleportation? I mean, it’s maybe a bit op but like, Transmutation would be pretty awesome like, just being able to change an Item into something completely different. and it would be incredibly useful too. Shapeshifting must be really fun too though, like being an animal for a bit or something. Or like, being able to pick things up with your mind, really there are alot of really cool ones but they all seem a bit extreme. 8.If you could only live in one place for the rest of your life would you move? If so where to? Hmm...yeah I think I would. My dream place to live is like, a small wooden house near a big lake in the forest. Not like, absolutely secluded, there should be like a small town nearby and like, hopefully internet too and stuff but that would be very nice. Just being able to live near the sea or at a lake would already be awesome though. Not really a preference regarding which like, country or state. 9.Do you like to wear sleeveless tops? Oh no, absolutely not. Doesn’t mean I despise them or anything but I already don’t like exposing alot of my body and especially not my shoulders cause like, I got fairly bad acne and it’s super annoying and I do have it around my shoulders and my upper back and really no one needs to see that. 10.What do you collect? I collected a bunch of things when I was younger but nowadays...not really anything I guess. Mainly cause it often just costs too much money or I just, lose interest in it. 11.One thing you only tell people you get to know? Hmm...I mean, theres definetely a difference if its online or in real life. Like, I do pretty openly talk about myself to people I meet online cause I usually talk to people there, where I know that they kinda have the same interests but when I know someone in real life, it’s alot harder for me to open myself to them. Maybe a reason why I never had alot of friends back in school, Iw as always quiet and never talked about my hobbies or interests cause I was scared of people judging me and that still happens today. But even with people I know online, it can still be very hard to tell them alot about myself cause I’m always kinda scared of being judged or just being plain annoying when I message them. So usually, with people online and with people in real life, the moment when I can say that I’m comfortable talking to them and that I can talk about things where I’m scared that others would judge me, thats kinda the moment that I really trust someone. I hope that kinda answers the question?

HERE IT COMES!! A POST WHERE I RAMBLE ON ABOUT CARTOONS??? ARE YOU EXCITED???
seriously though, under the cut i ramble about cartoons in a post that took me like an hour to type up, i didnt proofread any of it, thats my warning
ok but seriously. lets talk cartoons. there is a a lot that’s been on my mind as of late, i think we are on the changing tides of cartoons and we can be in for a great couple year of toons or we might hit another...dry spell.....
let me start with Cartoon Network, since they seem to be cleaning house over at their network, Regular Show is over, Adventure Time has little less than a year, i forget the exact amount that is left, like 40? at the upfront that just happened it sounded like ANOTHER mini series was about to come out, picking up right where Islands left off, which makes me wonder what is left of the show? is the rest of the episodes just going to be plot based? or do we have some one-offs and goofy adventures left? im not sure what i want but i’m really hoping for the best possible ending for the show and im crossing my fingers the theatrical movie is still coming out! i would really love to see one final adventure on the big screen, cartoon network hasn’t done a film since Powerpuff Girls, (well, i don’t think the Aqua Teen movie counts, i think that’s considered a Williams Street film), and I think theatrical cartoons like that are just like a thing of the past and it makes me sad. that being said, it’s been confirmed that Clarence is on it’s final batch of episodes, a show that i fucking adore and i feel never really got a chance to shine. i know so many people refused to watch the show after what happened with the creator and it was sad because Clarence is such a pure hearted kids show, it’s filled with really lovable character and i just think it sums up what it means to be a kid so damn well. I’m really glad it got as many episodes as it did (looks like it will probably have just over 100 when it ends!) but i’m really sad to see it go because there hasn’t been a show like this in a real long time. with everything besides We Bare Bears (a show i never got a chance to get into), Gumball (a show i fell off years back for no real reason) , Steven Universe and Teen Titans Go ending, I wonder what direction they are gonna head in? I wonder if CN is going to fall into fan pressure and cancel SU? I mean I still love the show to death and think most of the criticism is bat-shit insane but I wonder with the cancellation of the two shows (adventure time and regular show) that brought CN back into a golden age if they are gonna kill the only other show that has close to the size of the fanbase either of those shows did? i mean i say this because CN is still pushing TTG as the best show on their network, and don’t get me wrong if you are a fan of that show, but it’s really not fair that it takes up like 85% of the networks air time. i hope CN sticks with SU because i think it has a lot of steam left in it (i thought the same with AT, RS and Clarence but I DIGRESS), and i think such a positive show like that deserves to be on the air more often.
on the Adult Swim side, things seem to be picking up. Samurai Jack’s new season is beyond incredible and for me is setting a new standard of what adult cartoons can be? i mean we see action shows from japan all the time but there hasn’t been anything this adult and this well put together from western animation in ages. I’m hoping that Adult Swim/Toonami starts pushing for new series like this, and it seems like they might, with those new FLCL episodes coming out in the near future. it’s also pretty obvious now that Rick and Morty is Adult Swim’s new flagship series, and I’m gonna be pretty shocked if that gets the axe anytime soon. Based on Season 3′s first episode, i think the show is still going to be pretty great, i was a bit worried about it because it seemed like from interviews that Justin and Dan were arguing a bunch and trying to make it the best they possibly could. I hope they can continue to go on weird adventures and try out new things, and based on the final several mins of the new episode it looks like things are changing, and maybe even getting a lot darker, which i’m all for! i’m still sad that Aqua Teen got canceled because they still have not found a proper replacement for that classic Adult Swim absurdity. i think the closest they have come was Mike Tyson Mysteries, right down to that old school Hanna Barbara style, it felt like they almost from the ground up made one of those “recycled properties” shows that Adult Swim was filled with in the early days. if you are a fan of the real absurd, that real classic contrived plots that filled shows like Aqua Teen or Sealab, check out Mike Tyson Mysteries because it makes me laugh my ass off. i guess the other night (UNLESS IT WAS A PRANK) they said season 3 of Mike Tyson was coming in May, but they also announced that Hot Streets and Apollo Gauntlet were picked up for series which is great because those are more in the realm of weird cartoons that Adult Swim is known for. (PLUS while it’s not FULLY a cartoon Dream Corp LLC is getting a new season which is GREAT because i think that show really finally became it’s own in the final few episodes!)
the other big news concerns this piece of news about Nick ( http://deadline.com/2017/03/spongebob-loud-house-sherlock-gnomes-1202054433/ ) it seems like Nick is about to go all in on theatrical cartoons again which im HYPED for. I’m really shocked that The Loud House is getting a movie but i’m really excited because I thought I was the only one who was really enjoying that show. You can never know how a show is doing on Nick since all they play is Spongebob reruns and that’s why shows like Harvey Beaks got killed so early on. While I never watched Harvey Beaks, I honestly saw no promotion for it from Nick and when it died I thought a similar thing was going to come for Loud House. I hope these Nick Movies go well because I want to see more feature cartoons from big companies like Nick, maybe this will give Cartoon Network the nudge to get in on the big screen game too. But with the Loud House movie in the works, I’m CROSSING my fingers it’s in the vein of something like A Goofy Movie, you never see those classic cozy road trip cartoon movies anymore, it always has to be some big loud SAVE THE TOWN/WORLD like story, i would love to see more down to earth things and I think with The Loud House it might be a perfect fit. I feel like I should note that the article lists that two UNNAMED NICKTOONS are getting feature films as well, and I may be spitballing or dreaming big here but remember a few months back when CH Greenblatt said that Jhonen Vasquez was working on an Invader Zim movie with Nick and then promptly removed the post about it? i mean i was just thinking that he spoke too soon and it was going to be like the Hey Arnold TV movie that’s happening this year or that Rocko’s Modern Life TV movie (1 hour special as i see it being referred in some places) but WHAT IF, i mean hear me out, Nick is really going to go all out and do an Invader Zim theatrical film. I mean....fuck. I would die. I would straight up die.
OK THAT’S ALL THE CARTOON TALK I GOT IN ME FOR NOW, I WAS JUST GOING TO MAKE A FEW TWEETS AND CALL IT A NIGHT BUT I COULDNT SO SORRY FOR A LONG POST NO ONE WILL READ OR CARE ABOUT but if you do read all of this and want to respond please do i love talking cartoons like the big idiot i am, and i’ll probably respond and write even more about cartoons, thanks bye.

Praphit luv da kidz!
I was all set with my "The First Purge" review. But, as I was about to post it, it was as if I could hear y'all saying "Dammit, John Praphit - it's always monsters, super villains, demons, ghosts, and senseless violence with you. Could you PLEASE, for the love of all that's holy, recommend a movie that's wholesome, good, and family-friendly for a change? You're scaring my family! My spouse and I keep having nightmares! Little Suzie keeps slapping people and dropping F-Bombs. And little Timmy won't come out of the closet. Dag on you, Praphit! You rat bastard! Just one clean movie!"
While I don't appreciate the name calling, I do understand. That's why this post is all about kids. Granted, I personally believe that "The First Purge" (grade B movie btw) is for the kids, I can see why some might object. (Side note: It's def not a movie for you if you're a Trump supporter or lover of Fox News... or one of those people who believe that racism is made up - this movie is not subtle about its points :)
Let's review a handful of family movies that maybe you haven't seen yet, and a few that we're waiting to see.
#1 - The Incredibles 2
(Ha! I just noticed that raccoon in the pic)
This long-awaited movie has got something for the whole family! For the kids - It's got plenty of talking back to parents... though I guess thats not a good thing. I kept waiting for Mr. Incredible (the dad) to force feed the kids their veggies, and for Elastigirl (the mom) to slap each child from across the room, but I guess that could end up in a child abuse direction that you wholesome families out there might disapprove of...
Think about it -
Mom and Dad: "YOU WILL DO WHAT WE SAY! NO BACK TALK!"
Kids: "We're going to call the cops on you!"
Mom and Dad: "Do it! See what happens to them! We're (bleepin) super powered! And if they DO manage to lock us up, you had better pray we don't get out!"
... but I guess that's kinda dark, so I'll move on.
Something for the women -
Gender role reversal up in here! Mom is out there making the bacon, while dad is staying home to take care of the kids. It's cool, but it's been done. In this super-powered world, imagine if they had men with the power to have kids and man-boob-feed.... though I guess y'all out there wanting me to recommend a wholesome movie don't want to imagine that. I got it; I'll stay focused.
Something for the men -
(Well, I'll stay focused after this:) - cuz...
I mean damn... I'm sorry, but it's not just me. Ask any dude honestly about this movie, and he'll mention it. The makers of this movie knew what they were doing. This is marketing:) Grade: A (for ass... I mean butt... fanny?).
Sorry... Focused NOW!
Sherlock Gnomes:
I've always hated gnomes, personally. Why you ask? Look at these pics!
They always look so perverted to me. Like they're always... well, I won't say, cuz again I'm being wholesome for the kids in this post, but... y'all know... just look at this one.
You might say "John Praphit, you're being prejudice." Yeah? You know who these gnomes' faces remind me of? -
[Harvey Weinstein]
That's right! Maybe someone, early on, should have been MORE prejudice against such faces.
Anyway, a crime of perversion has been committed! And Sherlock is out to prove that though most acts of perversion in this animated movie universe are carried out by gnomes, this one particular act was not! - so instead of 100 proven crimes by gnomes so far, Sherlock wants the record to be at 99; good for him. I don't like how they're trying to get our kids to like gnomes! They're the absolute worst! - I'm learning a lot about my deep hatred for these creatures as I type this out... perhaps that's something I should look into at some point... but for now, I'm giving this movie an F.
Wait, isn't Johnny Depp voicing Sherlock Gnomes? - *heavy sigh* Make that a grade Double F.
SHOW DOGS!
Ok, so I'm not going to sugar coat this one - this movie has a scene of dog... fondling in here, as well as borderline beastiality. I'm not exagerating. Look it up for yourself! There was actually a big controversy concerning this movie that forced the producers to cut certain scenes out.
See, at least "The First Purge" doesn't have any of that stuff in it! Maybe you'll reconsider taking the fam to go see that movie instead of this nasty one. BUT, everybody likes talking animals, right?? Somehow the fact that the fondled dogs can talk, makes it worse... sorry, I'm supposed to be focused on the wholesome.
I guess, if your family is into humans trying to get it on with dogs, then... this is the movie for you. Maybe your fam has got a lil bit of gnome in ya, if you know what I mean. Grade: F
Oooooh but here's one "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" -
this one isn't out yet, but the last two were such a success, it can't fail right?? Granted, when I think about monsters going to the beach
- it never ends well.
And thinking about a vamp going to a BEACH leads me to the best case scenario of this
but maybe I'm wrong and it'll be fun!
Plus, this is an Adam Sandler flick! We know that his humor is all for the kids! So, we'll assume I'm wrong and give this a pregrade of B-
Lastly, let's talk "Chrisopher Robin" -
Y'all know about Pooh Bear! - and his human friend.
Loveable as can be!
In this movie (coming out soon), we have a grown ass man (CR) talking to stuffed animals. I LOVED Winnie the Pooh when I was coming up as a kid, like everyone else... though I never liked "Tigger"
- mainly because his name rhymes with "trigger" and more importantly it rhymes with... well, nevermind.
I also thought Tigger's character would have/should have eventually ripped those of characters to shreds; being he's a frickin tiger afterall... but that's just how my mind was working when I was a kid. Even if that DID happen in this one, at least it would be cotton coming out of these beloved characters instead of blood and organs.
Did I go dark again?
I went dark again, didn't I? Sorry.
I'm sure this movie about a crazy middle aged man hearing voices and relating these voices to childhood stuffed animals will be a fun adventure for the fam! PreGrade: B+!
There you have it! Perfect flicks for a fam of wholesomeness!
Praphit luv da kidz!
I STILL believe that "The First Purge" is better for your kids than these films: No thought-provoking gender role swaps, no husbands fantasizing over animated booty, no cartoon fictional monster problems, or stuffed animal problems... just real and raw issues of this messed up world we live in that could look a lil like the purge, if we don't wake up... just preparing young minds, but... I get it... too much for a lovely night with the fam.
We'd all much rather be watching Will Arnett do his thang in "Show Dogs"!
Ahhhh, now that's good, clean entertainment.

BAFTA Awards 2018: Three Billboards wins to honour as Times Up campaign comes to Britain
Crime drama "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" captured five British Bafta film awards on Sunday, including best film, topping an emotionally charged ceremony that featured fashion and rhetoric in support of the fight against sexual harassment sweeping Hollywood. The movie, chronicling a grieving mothers campaign for justice, won for original screenplay and outstanding British film, while Frances McDormand bagged best actress and Sam Rockwell best supporting actor prizes. "The Shape of Water" -- the most heavily nominated film of the night with 12 nods -- came away with only three awards, including best director for Guillermo Del Toro, while "Darkest Hour" claimed two prizes, including for Gary Oldman as best actor. With Hollywood still reeling from the fallout of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the resulting anti-sexual harassment campaigns were reflected in the mood of the evening. "Our film is a hopeful one in lots of ways but its also an angry one," Martin McDonagh, writer and director of "Three Billboards", said in his acceptance speech. "And as weve seen this year, sometimes anger is the only way to get people to listen and to change, so were thrilled that Bafta has recognised this." Star's arrived at Londons Royal Albert Hall predominantly dressed in black in solidarity with the #MeToo and "Times Up" campaigns, mirroring other recent American red carpets including last months Golden Globes. Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence and Kristin Scott Thomas were among the stars who wore black. British royals avoid making overtly political statements or gestures, so there was little surprise when the Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear a dark green dress, by British designer Jenny Packham, as she accompanied husband Prince William, president of Bafta, to the ceremony. Jane Lush, chair of Bafta, opened the evening soberly telling the star-studded audience it was important to acknowledge a "difficult" past year, and noted efforts to tackle gender inequality. "Brave revelations have followed brave revelations of bullying and sexual harassment, and which to all our shame has been hidden in plain sight for decades," she said. "This is a moment in history, it should be a watershed, a catalyst for lasting change."
Host Joanna Lumley, a British film and TV star, also praised the gender equality movement as a continuation of the work of the Suffragettes a century ago.
She hailed the "determination to eradicate the abuse of women the world over" as she took to the stage. Meanwhile, in an open letter published before the awards, almost 200 British and Irish stars backed a new fund to help women facing sexual harassment and abuse at work. It echoes a similar initiative launched in Hollywood last month and was kick-started with a USD 1.4 million donation from actress and activist Emma Watson. Choices at the Baftas, which fall between the Globes and the Oscars, often mirror those of the American heavyweights. "The Shape of Water", a story of love between a mute cleaning woman and a mystery merman-like creature, led the pack just as it has across the Atlantic, where it has topped the list of Oscar nominations with 13 nods, including for best picture. As well as director del Toros award for direction, composer Alexandre Desplat collected the original music award -- his third BAFTA win -- and the film also won best production design. Allison Janney won best supporting actress for her role as the mother of controversial figure skater Tonya Harding in biopic "I, Tonya". "I loved doing this crazy part and finding her humanity, thats what I try and do in all roles," she said backstage. Gary Oldman's turn as Churchill in "Darkest Hour" has so far won him a Golden Globe, a Bafta and the chance of an Oscar on March 4. He paid tribute to the wartime British leader, saying: "In those dark, uncertain days in 1940, he held the line for honour, for integrity and freedom for his nation and the world, so I thank you, Sir Winston." Accepting her best actress accolade, McDormand, who chose not to wear black, quoted her on-screen character who has "a little trouble with compliance". "But I want you to know I stand in full solidarity with my sisters tonight in black," she added.

Growing Up with siblings who were 8, and 14 years older than me I was engulfed in their era. I often give appreciation to being exposed to their tv shows, music, and of course fashion. The unique thing about growing up around them was the longing to be like them and experience what they did. I remember at a young age watching older shows that no longer aired. Along with shows on Disney I was able to watch Sister, Sister, Boy Meets World, The Cosby Show, A Different World, and a gang of others. These shows that were immersed of teen culture and mostly the african american perspective in America, were the beginning of the positive representation that aids me in everyday life. This was the #FirstTimeISawMe. My brothers clear favorite show was Boy Meets World, which was a predominately white cast with problems that affected middle class and lower middle class families, and felt kind of familiar to our family. This show was one of the first times I remember myself and representation because of the first and really only regular Black actress on the show. The first black actress I remember having substance and worth on this show, became a regular after first appearing in season 5, Shawn’s long time girlfriend Angela. The trill thing about Angela played by Trina McGee-Davis, is she never lost her since of blackness and wasn’t shy of making that known(at times). I say that this is more good than bad because although the writers may have acted like it was no big deal at times by not mentioning it, the other instances where she was dominant about this characteristic stay in kids/all viewers minds at the end of the day. Episodes were she’d mention her differences with quotes like “I’ve got to get some black friends” and “I’m studying white history, your people did a lot of stuff,” were funny but real shit. Showing the imbalance of going to a presumable PWI and having all white company, gave the opposite experience of HBCU life that we saw on shows like The Cosby Show and spin-off A Different World. The writers of BMW also made her smarter than we were used to seeing with characters like Lisa on Saved By The Bell, and Dionne from Clueless, who alike were surrounded in a white institution with white friends. Angela taught us that it was okay to read, study, and be smarter than your white counterparts. They gave Angela freedom to understand and clearly navigate life as a lover of conscious literature. Of course there’d be times when Eric would find books like Native Son, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, showing that she, although being engulfed in “white culture,” was Black and Aware. I thank Angela for the representation.
In 1984 black Americans were gifted a show that was all its own. A family that was conventional, a Dick and Jane family that weren’t struggling, extremely old, nor sexualized or dehumanize. The Cosby Show was a marker of things for us. I do not in any way support Bill Cosby nor do I choose to comment on current situation, however to not mention The Cosby Show in the First Time I saw me wouldn’t be genuine. First time I saw me was through Denise, Vanessa, Rudy, and even Claire (no shot to Sandra). Everyone in my generation were very young when we stumbled upon The Cosby Show, and really practically only relate to the younger siblings, we aspired to be other characters. I truly saw myself as Rudy for the fact that I was spoiled as the youngest then the young aunt who had to grow up faster. The cosby show taught us that even if you were the youngest or the oldest you have to adapt to family life and that’s for everyone. Vanessa made us feel like that awkard girl who evolves into a beautiful woman, im still on my journey but she made us feel as if we could make our own ‘beautiful’. Ofcourse all of us want to be Denise because she was cool, got the guys, wore what she wanted to, and seemed fairly smart even outside of school. We all wanted to dress like her and vanessa, change our hair like them and navigate New York like the family. The Cosby show was the first time as well that I saw people that looked like my family. We couldn’t always relate to the extremely in-poverished families nor the older ones such as Good Times, or The Jeffersons. And lastly Claire was the first time I saw My mother a sweet boujie women who wanted nothing but good for her children shared love like popcorn and was more gorgeous than anyone else I’ve ever seen. I wish to grow as they all did, they each brought wonderful evolution to that of this black family.
“My dream started by seeing Clair Huxtable on ‘The Cosby Show,’ I wanted to be beautiful, be successful and maybe have a great family and a brownstone in Brooklyn.”- Janet Mock.
I thank them for the representation.
To be one sided and say that positive representation only comes from opportunity wouldn’t be a vivid description of America now or in the 90s. Sheryl Lee Ralph who played Dee on Moesha said,“We’re exactly what the American public says it is looking for: an honest presentation of family life, regardless of color, regardless of ethnicity… People are crying out for quality and then acting like we’re not here.” But the thing is even in 2017 we see you. We see Moesha and we say Thank You. Thank you for the representation of a young black girl whose family could afford private school, but lived in the “ghetto.”A black group of kids who accurately portrayed teens slang and feelings, and who didn’t know what they wanted to do except hang out like us. A family who struggled with identity as black professionals while maintaining their intersectionality(ies). Moesha was one of the first times I saw me in all three of the original girlfriends. I related to an overprotective and over reactive father in my life, who wants the best for you but stifles you a bit. I had a mothers figure like Andell who was like a wayyyy older sister. And I had me who had my own goofy sense of self, was good in school, liked to write, and never wanted to stand in and be the same.
Moesha taught me about self love, and that even if you don’t take the road that is recommended you are the author of what happens to you and how your life ends up. Women aren’t given the freedom to choose who they are always and Moesha, along with many of the women on these mentioned shows, let me know that I was enough and could do so. I’m blessed to have had older siblings who acted like I was naive and didn’t know good shows, this doubt made me find classics such as Moesha that gave me a look within. Gave me a sense of identity and let me figure out who I was. I thank Brandy for playing such a reliable character that was a role model but a real model.
Before I end the list Honorable Mentions are needed so that I don’t rap your ear off. As illustrated in the first picture Sister, Sister gave me a sense of representation that I am appreciative of. Family Matters, Living Single (The Original Friends), Whats Happening, Martin, The Steve Harvey Show, Everybody Hates Chris, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Girlfriends, In Living Color, and The Bernie Mac Show(and many more). Movies from Love Jones, Do the Right Thing, Eves Bayou, Boyz N The Hood, The Secret Life of Bees, Juice, Poetic Justice, Baby Boy, Belly, Menace II Society, The Wood, and many others, our culture is massive and dynamically different with common interest of telling Black Stories and Black Struggles.

“It is not an understatement to think of “A Different World” as the single most important cultural achievement for historically black colleges and universities in American history, and one of the top five pop cultural achievements for African-Americans.” – Jarrett L. Carter. The show that had us ready for college at age 14, that had us dreaming of Hillman and the feels that came with the beautiful black campus. The show that let us know other things happened than studying all night, that although we could look forward to parties, clubbing, dating, and being independent, we had to protect ourselves and each other from rape, racism, domestic violence, and STD’s. The show was real and undeniable. True and Unforgettable. I wanted to grow up to embody Freddie’s understandable ambiguity her allure, Kim’s educated mind and focused path, Whitley’s fashion and her growth as a person, Lena and Gina’s individuality, and of course Denise originality and charismatic nature. This classic representation of levels and layers of black people let us know that we all weren’t the same but we could all move forward by helping each other grow. As a continuation of The Cosby Show it was the next level of life, we moved from High-school problems and choices to independence that showed us life isn’t always simple nor easy but the promotion of black people and perseverance could push our longevity along. I thank the entire show for the promotion and positivity the representation gave along with the actuality of real issues.
Although we think representation starts with the underwhelming lack of diversity in actors and actresses, it also has part to do with people in positions of power. Directors, Writers, Producers, and an ensemble of others hold the power to create representation or not. Its sometimes purely their responsibility to tell our stories staring us for us. Thats a lot. Its a big responsibility of creators to tell stories they care about or stories that relay messages people care about. Although Tyler Perry creates many jobs for vast majority of minorities-as he may have seen John Singleton, Spike Lee, and Quentin Tarantino do- by casting and recasting bulk of his company in recurring movies, he has always been the subject of argumentative talk with buzz of negative portrayal. We all have laughed at movies like Norbit, Big Mommas House, and even Madea, but the powerhouse which Perry is known for begs the question is all representation accurate, or even is all representation positive for black people to be exposed to. We have to conclude without, August Wilson there’d be no Fences, or without Spike Lee there’d be no Do the Right Thing. There’d be no Boyz N the Hood without John Singleton or there’d be no Fruitvale Station without Ryan Coogler. And there’d definitely be no 13th without Ava Duvernay (my shero). Although Tyler Perry is controversial I’d be dimwitted to not mention without him there is no film adaption for, For Colored Girls. To continue enforcing and positively promoting each other we must put each other in places of power. We must take chances on/for each other. Bank on each other and Support each other. We are Enough. Although we are a people who have experience extremes, said to be uncultured, ugly, and unworthy we continue to Shine and exceed standards. I’m grateful to be amongst these excellent people and may we continue to Shine.
Positive Representation: #FirstTimeIsawMe Growing Up with siblings who were 8, and 14 years older than me I was engulfed in their era.

For most of us, binge-watching these line is enough to satisfy our morbid stomaches. Others find a deeper curiosity, though. Just as some record fans detect the suggest to visit the site of major battles, “theres” beings out there who plan vacations around famous violation scenes.
Hey, some of us like Walt Disney World. Some opt Charles Mansons hangouts. No judgment.
If the idea of a tour through the darker surface of history pleads to you, check out these recognises below, which allows you indulge your inner violation buff.
1. The Sixth Floor Museum( Dallas, Texas)
While the endless bombardment of conspiracy-minded movies and works will forever cloud the tragic events of November 22, 1963 in our collective reminiscence, as far as government officials tale is concerned, President John F. Kennedy was killed when lone gunman Lee Harvey Oswald killed him from his perch on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas.
These days, the building is dwelling to a museum. While you cant actually access the notorious window where Oswald took purpose, you can read a lot about Kennedy, his assassin and Jack Ruby, “the mens” who shot Oswald before he could go to trial.
For those of you swayed more by Oliver Stones controversies than the Warren Commission, the grassy knoll is a short walk away.
2. Devil in the White City Tours( Chicago, Illinois)
H. Holmes was the type of character that shouldnt prevail outside of cheap fright movies.( In fact, he’s about to be the subject of a maybe critically-acclaimed Scorsese-Dicaprio joint .)
After opening a inn close to the locate of Chicagos Worlds Fair, he enticed victims to his Murder Castle, taking their lives in various, frightful directions .( Hanging them. Locking their chambers and gassing them. Locking them in a vault to suffocate. Fastening them in their chambers to starve to death)
Holmes would eventually confessed to 27 assassinations, though some approximates placed the numeral closer to, uh, 200. Nope, thats not a typo.
His reign of terror was famously recounted in Erik Larsons The Devil in the White City, which took the true felony genre to new stages by serving as an informative historical narrative as well as a scandalizing thriller.
This tour imitatives that approach, making guests a bus ride through Chicago that provisions lessons on both the Worlds Fair and the notorious Mr. Holmes.
3. Lizzie Borden House( Fall River, Massachusetts)
Lizzie Borden took an axe
The gruesome assassinating of Andrew and Abby Borden has inspired everything from popular songs to Lifetime movies. Though Andrews daughter Lizzie is generally believed to be responsible for the assassination, she was acquitted at contest. No other suspect was ever charged.
Nowadays, the house where international crimes took place has been converted into a bed-and-breakfast, because nothing adds hospitality like This was the locate of an axe murder.
For those who arent crazy about the idea of standing overnight at a notorious misdemeanour scene, but are still curious to take a look at a legendary part of true-crime lore, tours of the members of this house are also available.
4. Jeffrey Dahmer Tour( Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
Jeffrey Dahmer, the notorious serial murderer responsible for the assassination of 17 men and boys, took our nightmares to a new stage by engaging in cannibalism and necrophilia with the bodies of his victims.
But serial killers often become quasi-celebrities in our culture, inspiring in some the kind of preoccupation typically set aside for rock-and-roll hotshots and royalty.
Perhaps that explains why genuine felony fans can take a walking tour of the Milwaukee streets where Dahmer picked up seven of his victims, all while understanding of the cooling details behind his crimes.
Maybe not the kind of situate to go on a family vacation.
5. Mob Tour( Las Vegas, Nevada)
If the small-time evils offered by casinos simply leave you craving more of the penal lifestyle, a tour of Vegas focusing on the mafias capacity in the city ought to do the trick.
Taking a detour away from the familiar tourist traps, this tour into Sin City sees the websites of burglaries, assassinates and the favourite hangouts of famed underworld digits like Bugsy Siegel. The tour ends with a pizza dinner at a restaurant that once served as a thug meeting place.
It’s not clear from thewebsite whether or not youll take a bullet to the kneecaps if you dont pay up for your ticket.
6. Helter Skelter Tour( Los Angeles, California)
In American record, few calls are more synonymous with evil than Charles Manson. Through his charismatic temperament, he reassured members of his family to perpetrate nine assassinates during the summer of 1969.
For those with a certain kind of morbid curiosity, an epic, three-and-a-half hour tour will shuttle you to the website where Mansons partisans took living conditions of Sharon Tate. Married to filmmaker Roman Polanski( a person with his own criminal predispositions ), Tate had a successful playing job and was weeks away from giving birth when she was murdered.
The tour includes details on the living conditions of the murderer and casualties, and, according to its internet site, is not recommended for children.
Really? Huh.
7. Clinton Road( West Milford, New Jersey)
This 10-mile stretch of sidewalk through the groves of northern New Jersey has given birth to countless city mythologies. Ghost brats haunting a bridge. Demon hounds ranging the forest. Specter trucks seeking motorists.
As a exceedingly, very bored teenage, I saw frequent late-night excursions here with your best friend. I never viewed any ghosts. I did watch beings having sexuality in their gondolas, though.
Which isnt to say theres nothing absolutely startling about the road. Though the supernatural storeys probably arent based in reality, the place does have a dark past.
In 1983, cyclists on the road discerned a torso that had been dumped in the groves. Researchers determined that the main victims had participated in mafia act, and had been killed by Richard The Iceman Kuklinski, a feared syndicate hitman who are able afterwards take recognition for the thousands of murders.
Real life is scarier than haunt floors sometimes.
8. Crimes of the Gold Coast Tour( New York)
If recent record is any indication, slaying and scandal are surely common among the wealthy elite.
This tour, led by an NYU instructor, looks into the financial subterfuge and violence that lay beneath the layer of New Yorks Fifth Avenue during the late 19 th century.
After all, sometimes the scariest felons of all are the ones rich enough to get away with their crimes.
9. Serial Locations( Baltimore, Maryland)
While the case of Adnan Syed, imprisoned of slaughtering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, hasnt resulted in any official tour( yet ), Serial addicts had now been reached pilgrimages to the major locatings featured in the podcast, eager to employ real-life epitomes to the story.
With the help of a custom-made Google Maps, you can visit the Best Buy where a major telephone call was constructed, or take a trip to Leakin Park, where Haes body was discovered. Plenty of Serial followers seemed the advise to solve the example after listening, and likely usedmaps like this one to help them in their goal.
Thats one of the side effects of the true-crime detonation: Everyones a detective now.
10. The Dakota( New York, New York)
It was the fame death that shocked “the worlds”. While returning to his apartment on the evening of December 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot in the back by Mark David Chapman.
The building where the assassination has just taken place, The Dakota, still stands. Though you probably cant yield to live there, you can walk by on the northwest angle of 72 nd Street and Central Park West, appreciating the recognise where the life of one of our greatest popular musicians pointed forever.
The Dakota likewise depicted up in Rosemarys Baby, in case that movie wasnt creepy enough for you already.
Now, if you recoil at the idea of a tourism industry devoted to lamentable violations , no worries: thats merelyproof that youre still a respectable human being. Clicking selfies at the site of a mass murder isnt exactlyclassy.
That replied, battle is just as disturbing as murder, if not more so. But we dont magistrate people who visitGettysburg, because we know theyre driven by a sincere curiosity.
The same can be said for these smudges. If youre simply trying to get some sort of vicarious excite fromstopping by the locate of a misfortune, perhaps you need to rethink your vacation contrives. But if youre drawn tosuch locatings out of a desire to gain an even deeper to better understand the darker slope of American history, then youre frankly no worse than the audiences that have driven the true misdemeanour renaissance.
Youre merely interested in leading that additional mile.
